B&SR #1

Service History and Technical Data

Bridgton & Saco River #1 was built and delivered in 1882 alongside sister locomotive  #2. Both were immediately went into service building the rail line, starting in Bridgton Junction and heading towards the town of Bridgton itself. On January 21st, 1883 Construction was complete and engines #1 and 2 entered regular service ten days later. #1 was likely involved in the first accident on the railroad, when poor track conditions due to the spring thaw sent the engine down and embankment in April of 1883. Thankfully neither the crew, or any passengers, were injured in the accident.


Later in 1891 #1 was modified to have a straight smokestack and a larger firebox. Unfortunately disaster would strike both locomotives #1 and #3 in 1893 when both locomotives were burned in an engine house fire. Both locomotives would be rebuilt by the Porter Company and #1 would return with climax automatic knuckle couplers.


#1 continued to serve until showing signs of old age in 1906 and when freshly ordered engine #5 entered service later the same year #1 was quietly rolled onto a dead spur near the engine house where it would sit until  being scrapped in 1913.

B&SR #2

Service History and Technical Data

Built and delivered in 1882 alongside sister engine #1 and was likewise used to construct the line to Bridgton. In 1883 #2 also entered regular service. #2 had a relatively uneventful service life in her 24 years of service on the B&SR. By 1898 #2 had climax couplers installed and by the end of 1907 the locomotive was sold to the WW&F Railway. The newly renumbered #5 in WW&F service continued operating until scrapping in 1912.
