B&SR #3

Service History and Technical Data

Bridgton & Saco River #3 was ordered in 1892 in response to increasing rail traffic. Built by the Portland Company #3 was slightly larger than the previous two locomotives owned by the railroad. The new engine would get off to a poor start when it was burned alongside B&SR #1 in an engine house fire in 1893 . The locomotive would be rebuilt by the Porter Company and would return to service on the B&SR.

After 30 years of service on the B&SR , #3 would be sold to the Kennebec Central in 1922 where it would retain it's number and serve until the closing of that line in 1929. After the closure of the Kennebec Central #3 was purchased by the WW&F in 1932 and was used in regular service until a derailment in 1933. The derailment caused the abandonment of the WW&F and #3 was finally cut up for scrap at the derailment site in 1937.
